 If you’re like me, you are obsessed with home recording. I’ve spent a lot of time and money figuring out the best way to connect my microphones and guitars to my computer over the years. Here are the routes I chose and what worked best.

Platform

From the beginning I decided to go with the Mac platform, just because I had played with their iLife included software “GarageBand” and was somewhat satisfied with its recording capabilities. I don’t think it has everything, but I got a Powerbook G4 in 2003 and now own a MacBook Pro.

Straight Line-In w/ Radio Shack Adapter

The first thing I tried was to use the built-in line-in on my Mac, which is a 1/8 inch female stereo port. So, I got a 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch adapter from Radio Shack. This was the worst way to interface my guitar to my computer. The part from Radio Shack didn’t fit my instrument cable just right, it caused undue wear on my Mac’s port, and the sound was super tinny.

iMic

The iMic is basically the same as the Radio Shack adapter, only its got a short cable on it and it fit my instrument cable better. I still got a pretty tinny sound.

M-Audio Fastrack USB Audio Interface

I had my first fruits of success with this $99 audio interface. Essentially it takes your guitar’s or microphone’s analog signal and turns it into a digital one. It sends the digital data via USB to your recording software, and voila!

This solution was my first experience of semi-professional sounding recordings, paired with some GarageBand post-production mixing and effects. There was still a problem with buzzing and feedback, however.

I also borrowed a friend’s mixer which would allow me to do some mixing, and balancing, and pretty soon I was making stereo recordings. It sounded pretty good, but the interference increased. I had too many connections and cables and opportunities for signal loss and corruption.

Alesis 8-Channel USB Mixer

This is the solution that has worked best for me for a small home-grown budget while getting virtual recording studio quality. This mixer was around $200, but acts as both a regular analog mixer, and a USB interface (both parts of which can be used independently of the other). This mixer/USB interface removes some of the seams of the rig, allowing for purer sounding, higher quality recordings. The mixer also features 100 different pre-amp effects.

So, essentially, the signal goes from my guitar, through a cable to my USB mixer, through the USB cable straight to my computer. There are very few analog connections involved.

Behringer iAXE 393

There is one more option that has even less analog connections. The Behringer iAXE 393 has a USB port right on it, allowing you to plug it straight into your computer digitally. This is quite an incredible idea, allowing seamless digital recording. Hopefully more guitar companies will jump in and add their own USB versions of their guitars.

I tested the iAXE, and I must say that although the action was a little high, the guitar sounded great, pumping data straight into Garageband.

What’s Inside Uninterruptible Power Supplies

 Rectifier : this part of the UPS converts the incoming alternating current (ac) supply to direct current (dc) and can provide charging current for the battery and also the supply requirements for the inverter.

Charger : in a number of UPS systems due to the nature of their design a separate battery charger is used, this is more common on sub 60kVA UPS systems and is very common on small sub 3kVA units.

Battery : this is the power storage section and is kept charged either by the rectifier or a separate charger. Its storage capacity is generally displayed, as AH (ampere hour), which is the number of amperes of current that the battery can supply for an hour. There will be a number of limiting factors depending upon the application, typically if the design calls for a short autonomy (length of time the battery will support its load for), the batteries can be discharged to a lower level, in the case of emergency lighting where there is a requirement for a long autonomy the battery will not be allowed to discharge so far. These conditions help to allow the maximum design life of the battery to be achieved.

Inverter : this section of the Uninterruptible power supply provides an ac output to the load which is in phase with the input mains supply. Due to the number of conversions (ac to dc to ac) and the filtering involved it can be termed as a ‘clean supply’.

Static Switch : this circuit can be as simple as a relay or more commonly using thyristors, its purpose is to switch the load between the inverter and the utility mains supply. As has been previously mentioned the output of the inverter is in phase with the utility mains supply so that any switching between the two will be virtually seamless. This arrangement ensures that if the inverter experiences an overload situation, due to its extremely fast over-current detection circuits it will transfer the load to the more resilient mains supply. A typical example would be when a server rack is switched on, the inrush current, depending upon the size of your uninterruptible power supplies , could cause the transfer to the utility mains supply, and once switched on the load will transfer back to the inverter providing the inverter has sufficient capacity to support the load. Also a fault on the inverter will cause the load to be transferred, again virtually seamlessly; it would be unusual for any loss of load to occur during these conditions.

Maintenance Bypass : more typically found in UPS systems with a capacity of 6kVA or greater. This arrangement allows the load to be transferred under controlled conditions to the utility mains and the UPS to be shut down without loss. Normally carried out for routine UPS maintenance or UPS repair.

External Maintenance Bypass : the installation of an external maintenance bypass can allow the UPS to be removed/replaced without interruption to the load, also, if the actual maintenance bypass is fed from a separate supply it can allow load testing in the case of a major UPS repair and/or checking of the autonomy under simulated load conditions while the site load is being supported by the external maintenance bypass circuit. This is often used when allowing the UPS System to be bypassed onto standby diesel generator power. Alternatively, when batteries are replaced and removed, it can only be done by placing the uniterruptible power supply into external bypass.

 Notebook, notebook computer, laptop, and laptop computer are different terms for a small computer, which is mobile, and weighing about 1 to 6 kg or 2.2 to 18 pounds, depending upon the model. In 1979-1980, Bill Moggridge of GRiD Systems Corp. designed one of the first laptops and named it as the GRiD Compass 1101. About this same time, Sharp Corp.Ltd., announced their laptop Sharp PC-5000.

Thereafter the terms laptop and notebook began to be used interchangeably. Nevertheless, the terms, notebook and laptop are incorrect terms, as due to the heat, many laptops cannot be placed on top of the lap, and most notebooks are not the size of an A4 paper notebook. However, what manufacturers usually call as a notebook, end-users prefer to call it as a laptop; hence both the terms are used.

The concept of laptop was to make a device that could use the same software of a desktop computer, but much smaller in size to enable mobility and support mobile computing (ability to use the computer while in transit). Thus, further innovations have introduced transportables (which can be moved from one place to another without supporting mobile computing); tablets (which feature touchscreens and support mobile computing); ultra mobile PCs (which are very small and compact tablet PCs); internet tablets (which support internet and mobile computing); personal digital assistants (PDAs), which are pocket-sized and support mobile computing; handheld computers, which represent expensive tablets or PDAs; and smartphone, which is a PDA or a handheld computer with cellphone integration. Over the development phases, these classifications got blurry at times, and many machines fused functionalities of other categories.

Notebooks can be used for various purposes. Commercial purposes like attending phone calls, receiving and sending emails and faxes, typing out letters and printing them, making presentations with pie and bar charts, and taking data from one place to another can be achieved by any standard notebook. However, high fliers prefer thin-and-light notebooks and for regular office work, ultraportable notebooks are preferred. Both are wireless notebooks so they can be remotely accessed. Scientific purposes are best suited with a notebook that features fast computing speed, good 2D and 3D graphics display, and a large memory, like desktop replacement notebook, and a thin-and-light notebook. Artistic purposes require animation, 2D and 3D drawings, interior & exterior designing, arranging music compositions, post-production audio-video work, etc., which can be fulfilled by desktop replacements, gaming notebooks, and mainstream notebooks.

Educational institutions normally do not prefer notebooks due to its high chance of being stolen. Additionally, they prefer that their assets do not move around within the premises in the hands of students who may be careless. However, to keep up with the times, and to be considered as techno-savvy, they do invest in notebooks. The types of notebooks best suited for educational purposes are mainstream notebooks, and desktop replacements. Students need a notebook to do projects, prepare study notes, and to play some games in their spare time. They need to take the notebook wherever they go, hence, size and weight are major considerations. The type of notebook that fulfills student needs is a thin-and-light notebook with locking facility so that they can lock it with their backpack. Most students report late submission of projects due to their notebooks being stolen.
